If you decide to dye on your own with products other than Aveda, read all package instructions before using hair dye. Consider trying a small sample of hair dye on a patch of skin, such as your inner arm, before applying it to your hair. Highlights can add dimension to hair and give it a gorgeous sun-kissed effect when done correctly, but a few missteps can make you look skunk-like or worse. Thanks to experts Sam Tamish, Ottawa celebrity colorist and owner of the Natural Solutions in Stittsville, Ontario, and Selena the Stylist Assistant here is the the scoop on how to successfully highlight hair at home -- read on to see their tips:

• If you have "over processed, chemically relaxed or extremely damaged hair," says Sam, you should avoid highlighting your hair at home.
  
  
• Highlighting hair at home is easiest if you have blonde to medium brown hair, Selena says. If your hair is darker, make sure the box you choose shows your specific natural shade, if not, proceed with caution or opt to see a stylist in our Studio instead.
  
  
• In f you have short hair or medium-length fine hair, you can attempt to use a cap. They are best for adding highlights all over though, so if that's not the look you're going for, or if your hair is thick or long, you should plan to either use a highlighting kit that comes with a special highlighting tool or if the tools seem too tricky, use a brush or finger paint (while wearing gloves) the streaks on, which Sam believes is the easiest way to apply highlights to your own hair.
  
  
• To make your color glide on easily and take better, use a deep conditioning treatment the day before you highlight (try Color Conserve set), Samy says.
  
  
• To master the art of highlighting your own hair, Selena recommends practicing with your highlighting tools the day before you highlight. "Replace the highlighting product with conditioner, and practice your application on dry hair. It is a great way to get comfortable with the tools, and placement of your highlights," she says.
  
  

If you've been highlighting or coloring your hair for a while and you want to warm up or slightly tweak your overall color, try this: After adding highlights, when hair has been washed and dried, put your favorite all-over hair color on top. The highlights will peek through but your base color will get a nice boost....
